The Mail Road

Even for the old mail route established in the 16th century, Kumlinge was an important hop. The mail was transported in open rowing boats between Sweden and Finland. Every municipality had to provide sailing crew in all kinds of weather.

You can read more about the Mail Roads history on the website Postvägen.

Even today, the tradition of wooden boatbuilding and sailing the old-fashioned way is alive on Åland. Between Grisslehamn / Sweden and Eckerö / Åland, a historical rowing and sailing contest takes place every year in early summer.
