The Vikings waterway

The waterway passing Kumlinge was wellknown and used by vikings transporting trading goods from southern countries to Kaland, a port to northern Finland. In those times the water areas were wider than nowadays,so that certain passages used by boats now are dry land.

Later on, the same fairways were used by christian munks. For detailed information on e g the use and spread of certain herbs along those passages, see the book "Vikingarnas karlandfarled" by Sarkari Hinneri & Erkki Santamala (which you can loan from Kumlinges public library).

On main Åland the association Fibula is keeping the vikings traditions alive - among others with the Vikings market every summer. Good to combine with your archipelago trip!
